What is HPR?

Most of us got our start in model rocketry flying ESTES style kits.  These models flew using motors with designations like A8-3, C6-7, D12-5.  In rocketry, motor designations tell you a number of things.  The letter part of the designation tells you the total impulse of the motor in Newton-Seconds.  The number after the letter tells you the average thrust in Newtons.  The final number tells you the delay in seconds before the ejection charge goes off.  High Power Rocketry (HPR) typically utilizes motors that are larger than "G".  The definition of what is HPR as per the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) is as follows:

bulletUses a single motor of more than 160 NS total impulse ("H" motor or larger)
bulletUses multiple motors (cluster) that exceed 320 NS total impulse
bulletUses a motor with more than 80N average thrust.
bulletWeighs more than 1500g including motor(s)
bulletIncludes any airframe parts of ductile metal.

Once any of the above criteria are met you have crossed the line and moved on to HPR.  There are at this level a few regulations to contend with, and certification in order to purchase motors.  In the United States the two recognized sanctioning bodies are:

        National Association of Rocketry (NAR)

Tripoli Rocketry Association (Tripoli or TRA)

If you are going to be launching at either NAR or TRA sanctioned launches, membership in one or the other will be required in order to certify and begin your journey into HPR.
